September 2009
The dust has settled after the Ulster Rally, and now its all about planning for the future. We decided to miss the final round of the British Rally Championhsip, The Trackrod, as although we may have secured third in the class championship, we need to look at the best way of using our budget. So, the plan for the rest of the year is to do the Tunnocks Tour of Mull and the final round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), The Rally of Scotland.
We spent a while weighing up the options and decided that this offered us the best of two worlds. I wanted to do another tarmac rally this year to continue my tarmac driving development, and with my step-dad Doug Weir doing the event anyway, it offered us the perfect opportunity. Plus, the chance to have a family battle for top honours was too good of an opportunity to miss!
The Rally of Scotland will witness the worlds greatest drivers gather in the forests of Perthshire, and is set to be a focal point in the Homecoming Scotland celebrations. For us, it was an opportunity to compete in a world class event, with world class drivers at an affordable price. Considering the entry fee to the rally is about a quarter of the cost of what it would be to enter a World Rally Championship event, it's no wonder that many see the IRC as the future of rallying.
I've been keeping busy doing some work with the Brick and Steel 205 Ecosse Championship. It never fails to amaze me the level of commitment the guys who run these championships have, they seem to live and breath the organisation of the rally championship. There are some really quick guys competing in the 205's this year, and I'm sure many of them will go on to win rallies in the future.
